Closing The Chapter House For Winter Break

To help prepare your facility for the break, please use the checklist below as a resource to ensure your home and belongings are well taken care of during the time away.

❑ Communicate with CSL your travel plans (if applicable) and who will be checking the house in your absence.

❑ Clean all areas of the house and make sure all food has been removed or properly stored.

❑ Remove all trash from the property.

❑ Clear hallways of debris, clutter, and/or furniture.

❑ All fire doors must be closed.

❑ Ensure the thermostat for heat is set no lower than 65-68 degrees.

❑ Secure and/or store any valuables.

❑ Work with your Operations Manager to ensure that the outside of the house is clean. Properly dispose of any combustibles that may be stored against the exterior of the house.

❑ Check interior/exterior lighting and all external doors to ensure proper security of the property.

❑ Set any lighting timers to dusk to dawn setting.

❑ Ensure that all windows are locked and report any repair needs to CSL.

❑ Close blinds/drapes.

❑ Update CSL with current security system information (if applicable).

❑ Work with your CSL Operations Manager to ensure that the snow removal vendor understands the expectations for snow removal during the break.

❑ Notify university police and/or local police as to whether anyone should be or will be at the property during the break. Ask them to patrol regularly if possible.

❑ An alumnus or responsible party should have a key to access the facility if needed.

❑ Remember to restrict resident and chapter members’ access to the facility through the duration of the break via appropriate means (disable their key/swipe access, collect all keys from them, change door codes, etc.).

❑ Add or update the door code or key and emergency phone numbers list in the knox box in the event emergency personnel need access to the facility when vacant. We recommend adding the following contact information:
House Director, Local Advisor/Alum or Board Member, CSL Central Office.

❑ The house corporation representative and/or house director, if applicable, should be the last person to secure and leave the property.

❑ Consider decreasing the frequency of trash removal services during the break. Please advise your Operations Manager if assistance is needed.
